A Simple Tip to Make A Technical Presentation More Effective

Here’s a simple tip to make a technical presentation more impactful for the presenters.

After the presentation, give the audience time to reflect and respond.

How It Works

  1. Audience Reflection: Once the presentation ends, give the audience 5-10 minutes to think about what was presented. Ask them a straightforward question: “What was this presentation about?”
  2. Sharing Feedback: After that brief reflection period, each audience member shares their answer with the group.

This approach works really well for presentations done at work, as these are people you’ll see again. The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the presenter’s key points landed as intended. If the audience’s takeaways align with the presenter’s goals, great! If there’s a gap, the presenter can identify areas to improve their clarity and delivery.

This feedback loop is invaluable for technical professionals, especially when presenting to non-technical audiences. The smaller the gap between what the presenter intends to communicate and what the audience understands, the better the presenter becomes at conveying complex information.

Sounds like something you’d be willing to try? If so, let me know how it works out!
